- Layout issues.
- Calculating the number of teaching spaces required.
- Fitting all requirements within the teaching room.
- Furniture specification relative to quality.
The furniture specification tends to be something that some schools may not clearly understand. Many suppliers may provide furniture that, to the untrained eye, may look very much the same. However, there may well be some very distinct differences in the quality of the furniture. If a quality specification is not issued with the designs, suppliers will tender their cheapest range of furniture (usually cheap chipboard with plastic lippings and kitchen hinges). This could cause serious maintenance problems in the not-too-distant future.
Issues to consider are :
Core carcassing material, Hinges, Carcassing finish, Access for services, Types of services, Plinth, Worktops, drawer runners, panelling, handles, furniture construction, etc... not to mention the quality of installation.
"There are a considerable number of organisations available to assist schools in furniture and equipment
(F & E) procurement. The services offered by these organisations vary considerably. You should consider these differences in order to determine which organisation is best able to meet your needs for a particular project." DfES - Furniture & Equipment : A Purchasing Guide.
